98 escort 2.0 shifts in low when slowing down and i guess the speedo dosnt work? sorry info is not clear not my car and i dont drive it, but offered to try to find out wats wrong. thinking maybe bad sensor?

If the speedometer doesn't work it's probably a bad VSS. (vehicle speed sensor)
