McLaren to open HQ in Bahrain

The Formula 1 racetrack has attracted one of the world's newest sports cars manufacturers to business-friendly Bahrain.

McLaren Automotive announced yesterday that it would open its regional head office here.

All distributor-side management, marketing and support functions for the premium high-performance sports car manufacturer will be managed from the new offices.

The British car company, which was officially launched in March, will also begin sales in 2011 with its first 'pure' McLaren, the MP4-12C.

"We have chosen Bahrain for a number of strong reasons," said McLaren Automotives Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific regional director Ian Gorsuch.

"With a Formula One racetrack, an excellent business environment and its close proximity to our major shareholders, Bahrain was the obvious location."

He said the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir had hosted a Formula One Grand Prix for the past seven years and has excellent facilities for performance testing and hosting events.

"Last year, McLaren subjected a 12C prototype to extreme hot-weather testing in the heat, dust and humidity of the Gulf summer," said Mr Gorsuch.

"Testing was conducted at the BIC as well as on the country's desert roads."

He said the competitive cost and ease of setting up in Bahrain in addition to the attractive lifestyle being offered were major factors in the decision.

"On the whole, it was felt that the Bahraini commercial environment was very conducive to doing business," said Mr Gorsuch.

He said with Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company having a 42 per cent stake in McLaren Group as well as a 50pc stake in McLaren Automotive, Bahrain is considered a home away from home by the company.

Mr Gorsuch said that this was a very positive decision by McLaren Automotive.

"We have had close links to Bahrain for some time through our partnership with Mumtalakat, and last year successfully conducted hot-weather testing for the forthcoming 12C here," he said.

"And now we will be able to take further advantage of the number of excellent opportunities that come from establishing an office in Bahrain."

He said McLaren Automotive had a rich heritage in producing premium sports cars for the road.

"The street-legal F1 model, which was launched in 1992, is still regarded as one of the best examples of supercar exotica," said Mr Gorsuch.

"The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, one of the fastest cars on the streets today, is also the most successful supercar ever in its price bracket, with over 2,000 cars sold since its 2003 launch."

He said the McLaren MP4-12C was the first in a range of high performance sports cars from McLaren Automotive and represented 'pure McLaren,' from its unique engineering to its bespoke design where everything is for a reason.

"The 12C and future models within the range, will challenge the world's best sports cars, benefiting from the expertise and virtuosity of the McLaren Group," said Mr Gorsuch.

"It is set to re-write the rules of sports car design through Formula One - inspired engineering, a revolutionary carbon fibre chassis and an absolute focus on efficiency and quality."

He said the 12C was set to be built in the UK at the new McLaren Production Centre in Woking.

"It will go on sale in Europe from spring 2011, followed soon after by the Middle East, where it will take up to 20pc of the 1,000 12Cs built in its first year," said Mr Gorsuch.

The car is expected to be priced at $250,000 (BD94,272).

I have personally received email of the world dealer network of mclaren exclusive MP4-12C, but in range of Asia-Pacific only Singapore, Sydney, Hong-Kong, Tokyo held its authority, why not building up in Korea? i already put my strong interest in these curiosity of purchase and see also much more possibility of pretty mature market even further rather than sydney. So you dont get fear to go into Korea Market but only need mysterious & intellectual marketing in the light of failure when Mclaren F1 got down to USA. If Mclaren folks lurks in this forums, please email me i can do something.

Please mind you that Korea F1 will be open this year at the Youngam, why do you try to lose the chance ? Korean see the Mclaren to be far veiled presence, fairly enough to knock Korea out. Go Go

I think the answer you will get from McLaren is that they don't see the Korean market as being strong enough to justify a McLaren franchise at this point.

They are taking a measured approach with these new franchises which is very typically "McLaren". This is a very big step for the company - even moreso than really anything else that could impact their future viability, they have to get this part right.

As I understand it, they had some 600 offers of interest from around the world. They narrowed that list to about 150 candidates and ultimately have selected about 35 of them to get started with. Surely as time goes on they will be expanding their network of dealerships if things go as planned. There are a lot of countries that have not made the early list, but could offer McLaren some potential sales. Starting off with a smaller network is truly the wise thing to do right now in my opinion.

Erik, rather that Mclaren realizes not strong enough to go into Korean Market, actully the fact they are not eductated in the market makes them timid even further, thus likely chooses a far discreet way. Frankly image of Mclaren in Korea is casted in formidable presence in automotive technology, but the problem is those who feel in that way are minority.

The fact of people who can afford these supercars is limited have the possibility up reversely?

There are several large metropolitan areas of North America which have also been 'overlooked' in this initial list of 35 according to some people, and a few which were chosen that have left some others scratching their heads as to why. I believe if we all give it some time the market will decide where McLaren's additional franchises should be and whether the ones chosen so far were the right decisions. They have to start somewhere...

You may recall when the F1 was built they could not certify the car for sale here in the USA. Yet now that the laws have become more favorable to allow the importation of them and you'll find approximately two dozen here today. In turn, McLaren have established F1 service centers on each coast of the country in order to support those cars and their owners.

This too will evolve as time goes on. :)

McLaren announces first six U.S. dealers for the MP4-12C

· McLaren Automotive Inc. headquarters to be located in New York City
· Six of North America's initial retailer candidates identified to represent McLaren Automotive in 2011; Further announcements to come
· First MP4-12C production vehicles anticipated to arrive in summer 2011
· North American unveiling in August at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

WOKING, UK (July 4, 2010) – McLaren Automotive, based in Woking, England, is pleased to announce the launch of McLaren Automotive Inc. The company headquarters will be located in New York City with operations including sales, marketing, aftersales and retailer development for North America.

In addition, the first six of ten initial retailer candidates have been identified in preparation for the launch of the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C which goes on sale in U.S. and Canada beginning summer 2011:

· McLaren Beverly Hills: The Auto Gallery
· McLaren Chicago: Lake Forest Sportscars
· McLaren Dallas: Park Place
· McLaren Greenwich: Miller Motorcars
· McLaren San Francisco: Price Family Dealerships
· McLaren Tampa Bay: Dew Luxury Motor Cars

These retail candidates have been carefully selected based upon their experience in the segment and presence in the marketplace. McLaren has assembled an successful group of dealer candidates to represent the company throughout North America. Additional locations where McLaren intends to appoint retailers in North America include Miami, Fla.; Orange County, Calif.; Philadelphia, Pa., and Toronto, Canada, and these candidates will be announced soon.

Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive's Managing Director said, "The North American market provides a huge opportunity for McLaren and will be a benchmark for our future business aspirations. We anticipate that the region will see 30 percent of the global sales, so it was vital for us to identify experienced retailers with a passion for customer service: The Auto Gallery, Dew Luxury Motor Cars, Lake Forest Sportscars, Miller Motor Cars, Park Place, and Price Family Dealerships, as well as others that will be announced soon.

"As a native New Yorker, I know how demanding North American customers can be. They are looking for a great product with superb quality, innovative technology and authentic, unique design solutions. But owning a car with high performance that is incredibly entertaining to drive is not enough. The ownership experience must be just as revolutionary as the car.

"We want to be the best sports car company in the market. We know this is a huge challenge, but we thrive on challenge. In partnering with the best retailers in the industry with a proven record of taking care of their customers, we believe we have the ideal situation in North America to help us deliver on these expectations," Sheriff concluded.

The initial North American retailers will begin selling the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C from summer 2011 with a base MSRP within a range of between $225,000 and $250,000. The pricing is expected to be announced in September 2010.

One thousand 12Cs will be built in 2011 in a brand-new production facility at McLaren's UK headquarters. Longer-term, a full model range of approximately 4,000 high-performance, mid-engine McLaren sports cars will be produced annually by McLaren Automotive in the UK for global distribution. McLaren Automotive's aim is for its global network to remain more exclusive, more flexible, and more profitable than competitors' networks.

Tony Joseph, McLaren Automotive's Regional Director for North America, said: "Just as the MP4-12C was developed from a clean sheet of paper, so was our North American operations. We have recently established ourselves with offices in New York City, and built an experienced team to manage the sales, marketing, aftersales and dealer development activities in North America.

"As part of our business plan, we have taken great care to identify our top markets and dealer partners that emulate McLaren's core brand values and beliefs. Our ambition is to develop and build a better vehicle that is supported by class-leading aftersales, ultimately ensuring better residual values. We will treat customers with respect, and there will be a unique level of transparency in how we conduct ourselves with our retail partners and our customers.

"The key challenge for us in North America is to take the focused processes and principles that have come out of McLaren and ensure that those high standards are embraced by the retailers and experienced by each and every customer. It is a very exciting time, and I believe we have selected the retailer partners who understand and can implement this vision," explained Joseph.

First 12C deliveries anticipated for summer 2011 in North America

The MP4-12C is 'pure' McLaren, from its innovative technologies to bespoke design – everything is for a reason. The 2012 model year, two-seat, mid-engine 12C will re-write the rules of sports car design through Formula 1-inspired engineering, a revolutionary carbon fiber MonoCell chassis, and an absolute focus on total efficiency and quality.

The 12C was developed around the driver with emphasis on performance and drivability. It will be the lightest and one of the most powerful and fuel efficient cars in its class. The foundation for these performance benchmarks is the unique, one-piece molded carbon fiber MonoCell which provides enormous strength and rigidity yet is 25 percent lighter than an equivalent aluminum chassis.

The 12C has a bespoke V8, twin-turbo engine with 592 horsepower and 443 ft-lb of torque and is mated to a 7-speed Seamless Shift dual-clutch transmission. Its extraordinary mix of handling and comfort is delivered with its innovative Proactive Chassis Control. Its sophisticated, Formula 1-derived aerodynamics is aided by its Airbrake which gives the 12C excellent stability under braking. The 12C also sets new standards for interior comfort, visibility and technology in a sports car.

Customers that are interested in purchasing a 12C should work with their local retailer. The first vehicle deliveries are anticipated for summer 2011 in North America.

Upcoming Events of note:

McLaren Unveil at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
While McLaren Automotive will launch the 12C beginning summer 2011, car enthusiasts will get the unique opportunity to see the MP4-12C up close at the 60th Anniversary of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach, Calif. on August 15.
Attendees of the world renowned event can see a prototype of the 12C on the Concept Car Lawn in front of the entrance to The Lodge at Pebble Beach. The 12C will then tour North America to support events held by retailer candidates.

Great news from my perspective!

MCLAREN AUTOMOTIVE CONFIRMS LANDMARK LONDON LOCATION FOR FLAGSHIP EUROPEAN SHOWROOM

WOKING, UK (August 5, 2010) - McLaren Automotive and Jardine Motors Group are pleased to confirm One Hyde Park; The Residences at Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge as the high-profile and visually stunning landmark location for the McLaren London showroom. McLaren London will move into the showroom in early 2011 in preparation for the spring 2011 launch of the McLaren MP4-12C, the first in McLaren Automotive's new range of high-performance sports cars.

McLaren London at One Hyde Park will represent a true flagship showroom for McLaren Automotive; the architecture of One Hyde Park will establish it as a landmark development, its prime location in Knightsbridge guarantees immediate recognition, and the showroom's exclusivity as just one of the three key retail spaces at the base of pavilions B, C and D ensures a genuinely unique experience for sports car buyers. McLaren London is anticipated to be McLaren Automotive's leading European retailer and, potentially, the busiest in the global network.

Christian Marti, McLaren Automotive's European Regional Director, said: "One Hyde Park has already established itself as a landmark location in London, and we are both proud and excited to be part of its future success. The McLaren London showroom at One Hyde Park will represent everything we strive for at McLaren: great attention to detail, form and function in its visual impact and atmosphere, and a focus on the customers' requirements. We worked incredibly hard to ensure McLaren is represented by the world's best retailers, and Jardine Motors Group worked incredibly hard to convince us that they were right for us in London. One Hyde Park completes the picture for both of our businesses as we move towards the launch of the 12C and our future range of sports cars."

Sinan Omer, Brand Manager at McLaren London, on behalf of Jardine Motors Group, said: "We were honoured and excited to be selected by McLaren Automotive to represent them in London, and we hope to make McLaren London the most successful McLaren retailer in the world. Securing One Hyde Park as our showroom is the icing on the cake, and will give us a home that is befitting of McLaren's sports cars: like the company's headquarters, it continues the important McLaren tradition of presenting the company from a stunning facility that is both visually impressive and absolutely fit for purpose."

Richard Williams, on behalf of Project Grande (Guernsey) Limited, said: "We are delighted to welcome Jardine Motors Group and McLaren Automotive to One Hyde Park. We are in discussion with other leading luxury brands regarding the two remaining units. The McLaren brand is an exciting and befitting addition to the development and will be the only motor brand available at One Hyde Park. With over £100 million worth of apartments sold at the development since we launched the second phase of sales in April 2010 and with presales now totalling over £870 million, it is clear that the development is doing well and we are pleased to announce that it will be completed in late October 2010."

The One Hyde Park development consists of 86 apartments and three exclusive retail spaces within three pavilions, B, C and D. The McLaren Automotive showroom will be located on the ground floor of pavilion B, the largest of the three retail units, benefitting from a prime position looking out onto Knightsbridge and strategically placed between Harvey Nichols and Harrods at the top of Sloane Street. Jardine Motors Group will take over the retail space and will commence its own specialist interior fit out to McLaren Automotive visual identity standards in preparation for the launch in early 2011.

The McLaren London showroom also recognises the attraction that Formula 1 commands and the motor racing technology that lies at the heart of McLaren's future sports cars, uniquely displaying one of the team's Formula 1 racing cars.

Following the March 2010 launch of McLaren Automotive as a brand new British sports car manufacturer, over 2,700 potential customers have expressed a ‘serious intention to buy' the first car, the MP4-12C. The first 12Cs will be delivered in spring of 2011 and, while exact pricing will be confirmed at a later date, the car will sit in what McLaren terms the ‘core' sports car segment of cars priced between £125,000 and £175,000.

McLaren Automotive plans to launch the first in its range of high-performance sports cars from 35 of the world's best automotive retailers. London, Birmingham, and Manchester will represent McLaren in the UK, with other retailers located in USA, Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Australia. All retailers will take a naming structure similar to McLaren London (for example, McLaren Paris and McLaren Miami).

Project Grande (Guernsey) Limited (PGGL) is the owner of One Hyde Park; The Residences at Mandarin Oriental. The development was designed by award-winning architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners with interior design and development management by Candy & Candy. Services and facilities will be operated by 50 on-site dedicated Mandarin Oriental trained staff. Specialist art commissions by contemporary lighting artist, James Turrell will feature throughout the development. When completed in October 2010, One Hyde Park will be recognised amongst London's most significant architectural landmarks.
