Need new 2.7 engine for 99 intrepid

My son bought a car less than a year ago and recently heard knocking in the engine. The car finally ended up dying. My local mechanic thinks the engine is done for due to maybe running too low or out of oil. This car has 110,000 miles on it and from what I hear, this engine usually ends up going to crap anyway. I have decided to put a rebuilt engine in it (because of bank loan reasons). I just wanted to get an idea of maybe reliable places and any good deals out there that might have an engine and what kind of price tag can I expect for parts & labor? How do I find out if my current car has an egr valve or not? I'm just looking for any tips anyone might be able to throw my way. Thanks!

Personally I would look into swapping a 3.5 instead of the 2.7 whichare prone to sludge problems. Try doing a search should be able to find info on swap. I have heard around $2000 for engine and swap.

I didn't know you could do that? I've been getting quotes from mechanics all day and no one has mentioned anything except that it would be very costly to install a 2.7L. Thanks.

There is a manual on ebay with all the info for a swap from a 2.7 to a 3.2 or 3.5.
