Hey all... I'm finally getting serious about picking myself up a 4th gen Camaro...but I'm having trouble deciding which engine to go with. Obviously if money were no issue I'd go with the bigger engine, but I have to take fuel economy into consideration, especially since it seems it calls for premium. (What is the performance/economy difference on the LS1 between regular and premium anyway?) On the other hand, my ex had a Grand Prix with the 3800, and, well, go big or go home, right? I'm also wondering if there were any major upgrade years that I should look out for (i.e. go for the '98 over the '94 because...) So, weigh in!

Sup goser.
Well I have a 00 firebird coupe with almost 200,000 mi. And I'm still confident it will take me to texas to visit my mom (I'm in az) if you are watching you pocket like me, go for the 3.8. The reason being is that mechanically I think it has been the easiest car to work on. The only thing I took it to a shop for was to replace the clutch. And that's because I didn't have the proper tools or a lift, other than that I've done myself saving some money in the process.well, good luck.

I don't own any of these cars but I picked the LS1 seeing as how it's got good power & good gas mileage for a V8. Roughly the same that my V8 TPI gets, 25-27 when I'm easy on the foot on the highway & 14 to 18 in the city without too much stopping.

I have owned both 98 3.8 V6 5 spd, and 02 SS LS1 6spd. As for fuel mileage goes I was getting about 28 to 32 mpg on the Hwy with the V6 driving 65 to 70 mph. That was on regular fuel. With V8 on premium fuel 65 to 75 I get 25 to 28 Hwy. FYI, I had put wider tires and ran premium fuel on the V6 which had dropped the mpg down to the same as the V8, so be careful when picking tires and fuel. The 3.8 was designed for regular fuel, I later found out... Hope this helps....
