Turn Signal & emergency lights buzz

Whenever I use my turn signal I get a buzzing sound with no blinking lights. When the turn signals are not working neither do the emergency flashing lights. This may last for a day or so and then everything is fine. Has Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions for fixing?

You MAY have dirty contacts in the steering cloumn where the multi-function switch makes contact for the turn signals.

You could try spraying electrical contact cleaner in. Loosening or removing a cover may be required.

I took it to my mechanic today and the turn signal was working fine. He said that the combination switch was going bad. He did not replace it because he said the price with labor would be around $500.00.

I saw an after market one on ebay for $199.00 w/free shipping. Do you think an aftermarket switch would be OK? Is replacing the combination switch difficult, is this something a relatively inexperienced person could do? I did not ask him how many hours labor were involved. Do you know if more than an hour labor is involved.

I think the switch would be easy to replace, I have done similar operations to GM Vehicles, IDT you would even have to pull the steering wheel. Should be like 3 torx bolts holding the cover on the bottom of the column, two torx bolts holding the switch in itself. Feed the wiring down the column, etc.

I would want better proof it was bad like a voltage drop across the contacts, LT wire to power feed reading 4 volts or something...... Tech may just be blaming the switch as a guess. Switch could be that pricy, but do some checking around.

Didja find an area where it was buzzing from?

According to Alldata you do need to remove the steering wheel. That can lead to some issues if you are messing with an airbag and don't know how to service them or properly disconnect the SIR system. This may be a job better left to a professional.

I have had several of these GM signal switches out and it is TIGHT, but usually can be had out without removal of the steering wheel.
