my moms friend helps me with a lot of car stuff and i was going to have him help me take off my catalytic convertor cuz he has a breaker bar and i only have a crappy little socket wrench... he said he wouldnt help me because its illegal and if you get pulled over without one and they find out its a $5000 fine. he has a habit of not having correct information or exagerating what he has

a friend of mine went to get his car e checked, and forgot to put the cat back in. i think it was a 200 dollar fine...

i've heard of it being up to 10k though... so he may be right...

well i was thinking of either getting a BOMZ high flow cat which i hear is just a resonated test pipe or else just hollowing out the cat i already have then if i get pulled over ill be like "look under the car u damn pig, see the cat?"

what do people with turbo kits other than the greddy one do as far as smog checks.. i heard that all turbo kits besides the greddy turbo kit are not smog legal, do they register it in an area without smog laws? do they go to a friend who does smog checks and will pass them no matter what?

I thought it was just that all of the other turbo kits aren't CARB Legal. Meaning that they don't have a CARB EO#, which only matters in California...No? Yes? Because here you can have any kits or turbo setup you want, as long as you pass the sniffer test. The only place I think it matters about which kit you have is in California, where they require all mods to have a certified CARB EO#. Redneck, correct me if I'm wrong?

One nice thing about living in MI - there are no emissions tests to go through. :D So my Spyder has no cats :D :D

that doesn't mean they aren't smog legal in other states...
as long as your emissions are within the "guidelines" for the state... it doesn't matter what's under the hood...

That is the one thing I don't miss about the states is the emissions rules. Though they are looking at it quite hard now here in New Zealand so things may change in the future.

Might be different for you...But on my car, no cats makes it louder, raspier, and makes the exhaust pop a lot more. HP freed up? Can't really say, probably not a huge amount though.

my friend and me both had 91 integra GS's with the same exhaust setup (2.5 tubing to a BOMB tunable muffler) but he doesnt have his cat and his sounds more ricey when mine is soooo deep. we both have intake and exhaust but he doesnt have a cat and he runs 1.1 seconds faster on the 1/4 mile, he drove my car and got within .003 of my same time so its not the driver..

now i have a 90 gs without any exhaust yet

the smell isn't bad.
you get the smell of mildly burnt gas, instead of clean air coming out the pipe...

it's by no means bad.

it's like being in a racecar... all the time...

and you can't smell it unless you come to a stop, and then it's only for a second...

unless your car leaks and you get exhaust through the floor boards...

Apex is developing a new Catalytic convertor they showcased one in use on public transport buses at the Tokyo Auto Salon ( I LOVE BEST MOTORING DVD'S) it interesting because on a Skyline that produced 900hp it would knock off 200hp so it would be good for 700hp isn't that Something ! :o i ain't jumping out of my seat seems over-rated


O don't buy the New Evo 8 in the US because it doesn't have Active Yaw Control and i dunno if you buy it as an option. Subaru is releasing a Sti but be warned Impreza's are highly sprung if you modify them you better know what you're doing - the US sti is a 2.5 liter (they wanted to increase the performance for the US market.

an English dude tuned his Evo 6 to over 800hp making it the fastest in the world. He wanted to prove that not only Skylines could go fast - someone forgot to tell him we already knew that. :o

It does make the exhaust a bit louder and I do have some decent HP gains. A car with forced air will benifit from having the cats gutted or removed. I run only 94 octane or higher in the cars and it burns clean. No nasty smell.

You dont just lose 1 second or more from your 1/4mile time from doing something as simple as removing the cat. Stop spending your money on a GS and just get a GSX.

Either way, what MPH did you guys run on your two runs where he ran a second quicker? Like R1 said, you won't see a second shaved from removing the cat, there are definitely other factors playing into that time.

we both have generic intakes off ebay and a BOMB tunable muffler.. i have 195/50zr15 tires he has 195/60r14.. i think the weight difference between the 14s and the 15s would be made up by the more traction i have with the Z-rated tires..
